VIRGIN ATLANTIC REWARD-SEAT GUIDE

When does Virgin Atlantic release reward seats?

The 331-day opening date, the guaranteed first allocation, why “every seat with points” does not always mean Saver pricing, and when it is worth checking again.

Virgin Atlantic's published terms say flights open 331 days before departure with at least 12 reward seats. But the modern system is demand-priced: a seat may be available with points without being available at the lowest Saver price.

01

The quick answer

Booking window opens331 days

Virgin Atlantic's stated release point before departure.

That is the first opportunity to book. It is especially important for school holidays, Christmas, Easter, major events and other dates when many people are waiting for the same flights.

The key distinction

Reward-seat availability and Saver pricing are not the same thing. Since October 2024, Virgin says every available seat on its own flights can be booked with points, but the points price varies with demand.

02

What is released at 331 days?

Virgin Atlantic's current Flying Club terms promise a minimum of 12 reward seats across the three cabins on every Virgin Atlantic-operated flight when it is released for sale:

Guaranteed minimum at first release
Economy Classic
8 seats
Premium
2 seats
Upper Class
2 seats
Total
12 seats

Virgin notes that aircraft changes, major disruption or the absence of a cabin can restrict availability. The guarantee applies to Virgin Atlantic-operated flights, not partner airlines.

03

What “every seat is available with points” means

Virgin Atlantic changed Flying Club on 30 October 2024. It now says any available seat on a Virgin Atlantic-operated flight can be purchased with Virgin Points. This gives much broader access than a small fixed reward allocation.

The important catch is price. Reward prices move with demand in a similar way to cash fares. Two flights on the same route can therefore need very different numbers of points, and a popular flight can remain bookable with points at a much higher price.

  • Available with points does not automatically mean good value.
  • The same route and cabin can cost different amounts on adjacent dates.
  • Peak dates can remain expensive even when several seats are shown.
  • Taxes, fees and carrier charges are still payable in cash.

04

When are Saver reward seats released?

Saver seats do not have a separate guaranteed release time. They are Virgin Atlantic's lowest points prices and may be present when a flight first opens, appear later, disappear after bookings, or vary by cabin and date.

Virgin explicitly says Saver pricing is subject to availability and will not necessarily be offered in every cabin or on every flight. When Saver is unavailable, other reward seats can still be booked for more points.

What to look for

Virgin marks its lowest points prices with a red Saver label. Compare more than one date and check each direction separately—a Saver outbound does not guarantee a Saver return.

05

Will more reward seats appear later?

They can, but there is no published fixed second-release day or time. Virgin's terms say that after the initial guaranteed allocation has been booked, further reward seats are not guaranteed. Availability and prices can nevertheless change as people cancel, demand changes or Virgin adjusts inventory.

The terms also say unused reward seats may be returned to general sale 30 days before departure. That is a reason not to assume waiting until the final month will produce a bargain.

  • Check again after an initially expensive launch price.
  • Search nearby dates and more than one UK airport.
  • Keep Economy, Premium and Upper open if you would accept mixed cabins.
  • Act quickly when a good complete outbound-and-return combination appears.
06

The best search strategy

If your dates are fixed, make a diary note for 331 days before departure and search when the flight opens. For example, a flight on 17 June 2027 reached the 331-day point around 21 July 2026.

If the first price is too high, do not treat it as permanent. Search a realistic date range, compare complete return combinations and keep monitoring the journey. The best outbound is only useful when an acceptable return is also available.

Practical search order
1
Check the exact dates at 331 days
2
Open the search to nearby dates
3
Compare alternative cabins and airports
4
Create an alert if the result is not good enough

07

What if the outbound is open but the return is not?

For a longer trip, the outbound naturally reaches the booking window before the return. Virgin permits one-way reward bookings, so you may be able to secure the outbound and book the return later. Compare that approach with waiting for the complete return journey, including any separate fees and pricing risk.

If you plan to use a Flying Club reward voucher for a return companion or upgrade reward, take extra care: Virgin's voucher rules require the two sectors to be booked at the same time on the same booking. Confirm your intended booking structure with Virgin before splitting the trip.

Let Reward Seat Scout keep checking

When the right Saver price or complete return trip is not available today, save the same route, dates, cabins, travellers and voucher choices as a private alert. Scout checks every hour and emails only when your chosen rule qualifies.

You can monitor for newly appearing Saver seats, a total within your points budget or a meaningful reduction from the best result already seen.

Common release-date questions

How far in advance does Virgin Atlantic release reward seats?

Virgin Atlantic's published Flying Club terms say its flights are released for sale 331 days before departure. At that point it makes at least 12 reward seats available across Economy Classic, Premium and Upper Class.

How many Virgin Atlantic reward seats are released at 331 days?

The published minimum is 12 seats on every Virgin Atlantic-operated flight: eight Economy Classic seats, two Premium seats and two Upper Class seats. Operational changes can restrict availability in some circumstances.

Are all Virgin Atlantic seats now bookable with points?

Virgin Atlantic says every available seat on a Virgin Atlantic-operated flight can be purchased with Virgin Points. The points price varies with demand, route, cabin and travel date, so availability does not necessarily mean a low price.

When are Virgin Atlantic Saver reward seats released?

Virgin Atlantic does not publish a separate guaranteed release time for Saver seats. Saver is its lowest points pricing and may not be offered on every flight or in every cabin. Look for the red Saver label and keep checking if it is unavailable.

Does Virgin Atlantic release more reward seats later?

Prices and availability can change, but Virgin Atlantic does not promise a fixed second release. Its terms say that once the initial guaranteed allocation has been booked, further reward seats are not guaranteed. Cancellations, demand and inventory changes can still create later opportunities.

What is the best time to search for Virgin Atlantic reward seats?

For fixed school-holiday or event dates, search when the flight first opens around 331 days out. If the points price is high or Saver is absent, continue checking flexible nearby dates because prices and Saver availability can change.
